16. Eric Holler used to refer to himself as Eric Gein, after Ed Gein. I asked Eric why he took on the surname of a necrophiliac serial killer who kept a cup of noses on his kitchen table. He said that he had decided to use it in 2008 as his ‘entertainment name’ because it seemed to fit in with his murderabilia business. In 2013 he switched back to his real surname, after he often found himself on TV shows and in news articles. ‘If I had to do it all over again,’ he told me, ‘I would have of course used my real name from the start but … I had no idea the interest that would eventually occur in regard to the website and myself.’

20. ‘Hybris’ refers to a psychological blindness, coupled with ‘philia’ meaning attraction. It has similarities with sufferers of Stockholm syndrome (kidnap victims who fall in love with their captors), but hybristophiliacs differ in that they are not forced into these situations. They deliberately seek them out.
